The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, and renowned economist, Prof. Pat Utomi, have advised civil servants to prepare for life after retirement.

The duo spoke at the commencement of two-day training for directors and top civil servants nearing their retirement in Ikeja on Tuesday.

Ambode said the participants were being trained in how to prepare for life after retirement, especially in the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme.

He said the state government, through the Ministry of Establishments, Training and Pensions, as well as the Lagos State Pension Commission, would ensure that public service retirees not only get what was due to them statutorily, but also receive additional support.

Ambode, who was represented by the Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Dr Benson Oke, said prioritising pensioners’ welfare had moral, economic, strategic and social ramifications.”

The governor said, “This training is meant to ensure that all public servants, especially those who are nearing retirement, are trained in the implications of the laws relating to the Contributory Pension Scheme so that they can prepare for the future.”

The facilitator, Utomi, said the training was important for every civil and public servant to have adequate preparation for retirement.

He said, “The Contributory Pension Scheme has made it easy for civil servants to plan for their future. You must utilise your earnings judiciously for a better future.”

The Permanent Secretary, Office of Establishments and Training, Rhoda Ayinde, said the government was passionate about its workers, which necessitated the training.
